Mergan’s big game highlight of week
River Ridge star belts three homers; plus baseball bits
Monday, April 27, 2009 - 8:00 PM
Aaron Wilberding

Single home run games, they happen all the time. The two-homer day; a great feat, not as common. But three home runs in one game? It’s now a club River Ridge softball catcher Abby Mergen can say she’s a member of.

Mergen went 3 for 4 Friday in a 20-3 nonconference victory over Wauzeka-Steuben with all three hits being home runs. She also did it with runners on base as she drove in eight home runs. That means she drove in five others as three of those were herself.

You’re probably saying, “After the first two, just put her on.” Well, W-Z did that once and River Ridge’s DP Heather White, hitting right after her in the lineup, belted a homer of her own.

Talk about a power surge.

NEW WBCA RANKINGS

The second Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association spring baseball poll was released this week.

Not a lot of changes in the top of the four divisions in the WBCA polls this week. La Crosse Central (10-1) is still tops in Division 1, Madison Edgewood (8-1) in Division 2 and University School (8-1) in Division 3. The only new No. 1 is Barneveld, which jumps from No. 7 to No. 1 in Division 4, knocking Pecatonica (7-1) off its perch.

The bottom half of the brackets saw some change in all four polls. You can check them all out here.

PRIME TIME PLAYERS

- Baldwin-Woodville ace Dylan Demotts got the complte game win over Hayward, 5-2, April 18 striking out 12 without a walk and allowing just three hits.

- It was a pitching duel in Cumberland as Spooner’s Sam Holden got the 1-0 win, allowing just one hit and striking out nine. His counterpart Graham Miller allowed one run and struck out 11 without a walk in the loss.

- Green Lake defeated Wayland Academy, 17-6, April 17, in which Brad Brooks was a big reason. Brooks went 4 for 4 at the plate including a pair of doubles and three RBI with five runs scored. He was also the winning pitcher.

These are just from what we’ve received. Don’t see your star player here. E-mail stats@prepsonthenet.com, put “Prime Time Players” in the subject line. We’ll get them up in next week’s Diamond Dish.

GAME OF THE WEEK PICKS

We’ve been getting E-mails for “Game of the Week” nominations. They were all good ones. Here are the best of the best. Nominate your own Game of the Week.

1. Beloit Memorial at Middleton, BASEBALL. Tuesday: The Cardinals have stumbled out of the blocks a bit to start the season and this Big Eight Conference matchup could be interesting.

2. Milwaukee Bradley Tech at Milwaukee Riverside, BASEBALL, Tuesday: Bradley Tech has received an Honorable Mention in the first two in-season WBCA polls. With Riverside knocking off Milwaukee King last Friday, this one could go a long way in the City Conference Gold Division.

3. Wayland Academy at Kenosha Christian Life, SOFTBALL, (DH) Tuesday: Christian Life is off to a solid start after winning just seven games the previous two seasons. A big reason is Brie Tennyson who already has a no-hitter this season.

4. Milwaukee Rufus King at Living Word Lutheran (West Bend), SOFTBALL, Saturday: This is a nonconference matchup that could give an upstart Living Word team some momentum for the rest of the season.
