MILWAUKEE – School’s on in Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Health Department did an about-face this week reversing an earlier decision that would have kept 17 Milwaukee Public sites locked through Friday because of a swine flu (H1N1) investigation.
All MPS schools will open Wednesday, May 6.
“It’s great to have all our children and staff back in our buildings,” said MPS Superintendent William Andrekopoulos. “We’re back to our core mission of teaching and learning.”
MPS high schools including Milwaukee Hamilton and Riverside University were just a few of the schools closed the past six days by Milwaukee health officials.
There are no limitations on events or activities involving MPS students and staff. This will mean proms, graduations, and sporting events are back on as scheduled.
The WIAA has been closely monitoring the situation and working with their sports advisory committee and MPS officials.
In the arena of sporting events and schedules WIAA assistant director Tom Shafranski said, “We’re going to be flexible and follow the directions the school takes based upon the information provided by their medical advisors. The WIAA has nothing to do with the closing of schools.
“We simply respond and react to however that closing is determined and work to support the direction of school officials on how long that closing might last.”
Milwaukee Public School officials reminds students that classes at four schools have been closed and programming was suspended by the Milwaukee health commissioner in the wake of a swine flu investigation according to MPS spokeswoman Roseann St. Aubin.
