WBCA All-Star Classic’s latest edition a success
A look back, plus a peek at this week’s summer schedule

OSHKOSH – Rain, for the most part, stayed away and made the 26th annual Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Classic at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh marked another successful weekend for the event.

The cream again rose to the top over the course of the two days and six games as player after player raved about the level of competition they faced.

“It’s an honor to be here,” La Crosse Aquinas’ Bobby Kachel said. “There are 72 guys that get a chance to come here and to be one of the 18 guys that gets a chance to play for the North is pretty sweet.”

Attendance for the games pleased members of the WBCA and stuck around through some brief showers for a solid finish that pitted the two undefeated teams against each other in the final game of the classic.

For fans looking to see the top stars strut their stuff on the same field, it was good to see the likes of Kimberly’s Brad Schreiber and Whitefish Bay’s Kevin James and Charlie Markson playing on the same high school field as big things await a lot of those guys.

For full recaps on both days of the 26th annual WBCA All-Star Classic, be sure to check here for Friday and here for Saturday’s game notes from Aaron Wilberding.

SCREIBER TAKES GATORADE HONORS

Kimberly pitcher Brad Schreiber, who was the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association’s Player of the Year for the second straight season, has been named the Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year.

That means a clean sweep for the Papermakers who also had Claudia Harke win the softball player of the year honors.

You can read a story on both of them from the Appleton Post Crescent here.

PRIME TIME PLAYERS

Sean Grabig’s performance in the WBCA All-Star Classic earned him the Tim Nygaard Most Valuable Player honors and deserve another round of recognition.

Like he said after receiving the honor, “It feels good to be from Bay Port right now.”

There were also some great performances in the summer baseball season over the last week.

Pewaukee center fielder Bryan Spakowicz went 3 for 3 with eight RBI, four runs scored off a home run and a double against St. Francis on June 25.

Plymouth hurler Cory Thuemmler pitched a gem on June 25, allowing just one hit and striking out seven and not letting his nine walks hurt him.

These are taken just from results we have received. Have a player you feel should be mentioned here? Be sure to E-mail aaron@prepsonthenet.com by Monday morning to have it in next week’s PTP section.

BIG GAME HUNTING

The summer baseball season is at its peak. These are the ones we are keeping a close eye on.

1. Kewaskum at New Holstein, TONIGHT: These two teams have separated themselves from the rest of the Eastern Wisconsin Conference. The Huskies can take a two-game lead with a win.

2. Brookfield East (8-3, 13-10) at Menomonee Falls (8-3, 19-3), TONIGHT: Two of the three teams tied atop the Greater Metro North can help clear up the conference title race with the winner waiting to see what Brookfield Central does.

3. Franklin (7-4, 13-7) vs. Oak Creek (8-4, 13-5), TONIGHT AND TUESDAY: Two rivals meet in a home in home series in the Greater Metro-South. A one-sided affair could help clear up the title picture in the South.

4. New Berlin Eisenhower (9-2, 13-6) vs. New Berlin West (7-2, 10-5), WEDNESDAY: This is a crosstown showdown that will go a long way in deciding if the Lions can stake claim to the Woodland-North crown in coming weeks.

5. New Berlin West (7-2, 10-5) at Cudahy (9-3, 13-10), FRIDAY: After the Vikings get done with their cross town rival, they get the top team in the Woodland South meet for the only time during the regular season.
