64 Special Olympians chosen to compete

STEVENS POINT - Sixty-four athletes from across Wisconsin have been selected to attend the 2010 Special Olympics National Games in Nebraska.

The selection process was held this month at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

“All nominated athletes will attend, and the final selection will be made Sunday,” said Special Olympics vice president of marketing Kelly Kloepping.

During the Assessment and Selection Camp, staff and coaches assessed the athletes’ behavior, self-help ability, sportsmanship, skill, and other traits.

Athletes will participate in aquatics, athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, golf, gymnastics, powerlifting, soccer and tennis.  

Those making the team from West Bend include Mary Grover – gymnastics, Corey Sager – soccer, and Donald Morinelli-bowling.

Team Wisconsin will join 3,000 athletes from across the country for the six day tournament. The National games will be held July 18-23, 2010.

Some of the athletes selected to complete in the National games, July 18 – 23 include Elisabeth Andersen – gymnastics, Emily Datta, Michelle Buchanan and Cynthia Bentley-tennis, Crystalynn Fougner and Cory Buss-athletics, Rebecca Burkee-bocce, Joseph Anderson and Thomas Alber – bowling, Mary Grover – gymnastics, Corey Sager, Thomas Kreinus Jr. and Millinda Heath – soccer, Rickie Kelly and Bryan Herrman – basketball.

Special Olympics Wisconsin provides sports training and competition for nearly 10,000 athletes with cognitive disabilities in 18 different sports year-round.
